Encouragement is Free!

Good Saturday Afternoon!
Let’s talk de-escalation. De-escalation is tricky and is not a “one size fits all” technique. There isn’t one precise way to de-escalate and it isn’t the most natural feeling. How you approach behavior that needs to be de-escalated determines the outcome of the behavior.  Here are some simple steps to remember:
1. Safety first! Keep everyone safe.
2. Walk, talk, and move calmly.
3. If you can move to a safe room or area, then move. (When a student is having a behavior removing the audience is critical.)
4. Do not demand answers or reasons.  Give them an opportunity to calm.
5. Confirm their feelings. Let them know you hear them and want to help.
6. Share control.

Hope this helps! As always you are welcome to email if you have questions.
